Hunter kids hit the waves at Vision Australia surf school

For many of us, spending days down at the beach swimming, surfing or playing cricket, are some of our most treasured childhood memories.

But, it's not always the same story for kids growing up blind or with low vision.

That's why one unique event at Blacksmiths Beach in Newcastle gave local kids the chance to hit the waves - some for the very first time.

ABC Newcastle's Laurise Dickson dusted off her rashie, grabbed her goggles and hit the sand to check it out.

VOICES: 16-year-old Dominic Pickton, blind world surfing champion and olympian, Matt Formston and Jordan Ashby from Vision Australia Hunter and Central Coast.
