** Please note that the Trans-Tasman and National Championships that were scheduled for May in Port Macquarie have been postponed as a result of COVID-19 outbreak. Australia's hosting of the World Blind Bowls Championships in March 2021 is currently being reviewed but is still on at this stage.

The Australian Blind Bowlers Association (ABBA) is the peak body for State Associations for the Blind and Vision Impaired.

ABBA was formed in 1977 in order to provide a sport for Blind & Vision impaired people.

Since 1985 the association has had a number of Patrons who have been very generous with their time. The association was very fortunate in being under the patronage of Mr John Dobbie AM, who was a very prominent figure in Lawn Bowls at Australian and International levels. Since Mr Dobbie, we have seen Mr Bruce Hensel, former owner and founder of Henselite Bowls Pty Ltd. The current Patron, Mr Danny Keating is a representative with Taylor’s Bowls Pty Ltd.

The first State Association to be formed was Victoria in 1976, South Australia in 1979, New South Wales in 1980, Queensland and Western Australia 1982  Northern Territory 1992.

Currently there are four existing states still providing social bowls mostly on a weekly basis (each state is slightly different).

Blind Australian Championships commenced in 1980 and are held annually within affiliated states, on a rotating basis. The nominated state hosts the championships for individual, pairs and state awards. The “Nationals” have been and continue to be a great way to compete at a high level and meet and renew people from all over Australia. Every four years, the International Blind Bowls Association hold a World Championships where as many as 13 countries compete.

Australia will be hosting the 2021 championship in Tweed Heads on the Gold Coast.

The purposes of the Association are:  Advance, encourage, promote, and control lawn bowls activities for blind and vision impaired bowlers.

  1.   To liaise and co-operate with associations of like interest in Australia and overseas to promote, manage and control interstate and international lawn bowls games.
  2.   To establish liaison with other sporting bodies and government authorities
  3.   To procure or accept sponsorship, gifts, including legacies, donations whether of real or personal property and subject to such conditions, if any, as may be thought fit.
  4.   To provide such assistance and advice to members as may be appropriate.
  5.   To promote an informed public understanding of blindness and visual Impaireness.

We welcome enquires from new and existing bowlers and helpers who are interested in joining in the fun.
